Portland Baroque Orchestra brings you their annual production of Handel’s Messiah in a handy pandemic-friendly, pocket-sized edition! Performing arias and highlights, Northwest-based soloists – soprano Arwen Myers, alto Hannah Penn, tenor Zach Finkelstein, and bass-baritone Daniel Mobbs – are joined by an organist and a string quartet in this holiday favorite. For more than 25 years PBO has presented Messiah annually and is proud to be able to continue the tradition in a way that puts the health and safety of our audiences, musicians, and staff first.

In addition to fabulous performances of the past, you’ll have the honor of hearing and seeing 4 amazing PYC alumni! Isaac Chapelle: tenor, would have been at Peabody Conservatory right now. Since he is here, we asked him to come in and sing the stunningly beautiful Every Valley from Handel’s Messiah, James Walton: who graduated from PYC 3 years ago as a bass is now singing countertenor and has applications out to some of the finest music schools in the land. Ian Schipper: bass and recent graduate of St Olaf College sings an amazing Verdi aria. He’ll be pursuing a master of music  of vocal performance at UCLA. Cara Gabrielson: soprano now located in San Francisco went on last year to become a National Semi Finalist at the Metropolitan Opera. Last January Cara soloed on a wonderful Mozart aria with Amadeus Chamber Orchestra.

Metropolitan Youth Philharmonic Holiday Spectacular

Metropolitan Youth Symphony (MYS) is excited to continue our partnership with the Oregon International Ballet Academy (OIBA) with our first-ever virtual Holiday Spectacular. The concert will premiere Wednesday December 23 at 7 pm on the MYS YouTube Channel, and will celebrate holiday music from around the world, including Carol of the Bells, a jazz rendition of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride, and more! The festive evening will culminate in a virtual holiday extravaganza featuring dances from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker,” performed by OIBA dancers with music by MYS musicians.
