In String Quartet No. 3, G.F. Haas uses total darkness to evoke the night before Christ’s resurrection in this powerful work, performed by the Pyxis Quartet on Maundy Thursday.
WORKS
G.F. Haas: String Quartet No. 3, In iij Noct.
PERFORMERS
Gregory Ewer, violin Emily Cole, violin Ron Blessinger, viola Marilyn de Oliveira, cello
The Pyxis Quartet performs music of Oregon composers Kenji Bunch and Scott Unrein, along with Béla Bartók’s high energy finale from his 4th String Quartet. See concert page for address.
For our 41st concert, we’ve invited Boston-based drummer Cristián Tamblay to join the Pyxis Quartet for a unique performance of the finale from Bartok’s String Quartet No. 4. The program also features Caroline Shaw’s brilliant Entr’acte, and the piece that inspired her to write it, Joseph Haydn’s marvelously eccentric Minuet and Trio from his String Quartet in F major, Op. 77, No. 2.
“Music is my connection to the world. It guides me to understand my place in relation to others and challenges me to make clear the things I do not understand. I imagine that music is a meeting place at which all people can converse about their unique differences and common stories.” — Jessie Montgomery
Unique differences and common stories, music as meeting place for fellowship and conversation… this is what Fridays with 45th Parallel has become since our first broadcast last May. This Friday will be our 37th show, and features the Pyxis Quartet performing music of Carlos Simon, Jessie Montgomery, and Florence Price, in honor of Black History Month.
