Panelists: Leroy Bynum from Portland State University (moderator), Eliza Canty Jones (Oregon Historical Society), and Dr. Carmen Thompson (Visiting Scholar in the Black Studies Department at Portland State University).  

This 60-minute panel will focus on contextualizing Journeys to Justice within a historical perspective, looking specifically at the origins of white supremacy, Oregon’s racist past, and how current racism reverberates in the Black community today.

How do we as a music industry address our own privilege, biases, and exclusionary practices relative to race, gender identity, ableism and more? What do we need to do as individuals and enterprises to make this a truly great and equitable music city?

Join a panel led by Diversity Equity and Inclusion Professional, Déja Fitzgerald, to hear from different music industry stakeholders who are invested in social justice within our industry. Learn how to grapple with making Portland more just, equitable and excellent from activists, individual artists, writers, and music businesses. We are excited to dive into how we can create tangible change in our music ecosystem!

U of O School of Music: Lara Downes Virtual Residency: Concert Preview Webinar “Holes in the Sky”

As part of OBF’s virtual 2021 season, Ms. Downes will be presenting a virtual concert event, “Holes in the Sky,” a project that celebrates the power of female creativity and the women who inspire her to make holes in the sky. The concert will feature newly discovered works by Florence Price, new works from Julia Adolphe, Clarice Assad, Angelica Negron, Paola Prestini, Elena Ruehr, Marika Takeuchi and others, as well as original arrangements of iconic songs by Billie Holiday, Abbey Lincoln, Joni Mitchell, and Nina Simone. This webinar will be a lecture-recital presentation to illuminate the stories behind the music.

THEME (which stands for theory, history, ethnomusicology, music education) is a colloquium series for SOMD’s academic music students. The series includes professional development workshops as well as featured speakers from these academic fields. In this session, Ms. Downes will speak about her experience uncovering a set of previously undiscovered music by composer Florence Price, and her collaboration with musicologist J. Michael Cooper (Southwestern University) and other musicologists.
